Thinking of moving to the UK from Australia?

An increase in demand for professional contractors means good news for those thinking of moving to the UK.

An ongoing skills shortage predicted in the temporary labour market has prompted a growing need for qualified staff across a number of sectors. Moving overseas to work as a contractor can be a daunting prospect for most people, with relocating, finding places to live and work among the most stressful part of the whole process. This is why having an umbrella company in Australia to act as your ’employer’ is a beneficial solution for contractors.

MyOE UK General Manager and Finance Director Andy Myers says it is a good opportunity for skilled workers to relocate.

“UK media and recruitment firms are reporting renewed opportunities for accountants, IT workers, engineers and business consultants wanting to live and work in the UK. Recruiters are forecasting a shortage through to the end of 2013 and into 2014.”

Mr. Myers said the Recruitment and Employment Confederation’s (REC) recent Jobs Outlook survey indicated that 40% of employers planned to increase their use of contractors over the next three months and 34% over the next four to 12 months.

“Employers are more optimistic than they were last year. There are 400,000 more people employed in the UK compared with 12 months ago and the prediction of continued growth indicates we are recovering from the recession, especially in the job market.”

Mr. Myers says the REC’s June report listed IT and engineering in second and third place on their league table of sectors that have skills shortages.

“For IT professionals in particular there has not been such a call for contractors since May 2011, and the demand index for engineering has been increasing month by month by over 10 per cent,” he says.

IT contractor demand for June was scored by the REC at 57.3 points, which is up from 54.8 in January and from the 2012 peak of 54.6 in December. There has been real term growth of almost six index points in the last year.

The REC report explained that a lack of specific IT skills needed to fulfill permanent roles meant that employers were hiring on a temporary basis instead, which is reflected in the increased need for contractors. The report noted a particular demand for IT contractors with skills in Java, PHP, Net and VM.

Find your ideal contractor umbrella company for your work in the UK

Moving overseas to work as a contractor can be a daunting prospect for most people, with relocating, finding places to live and work among the most stressful part of the whole process. This is why having an umbrella company to act as your ’employer’ is a beneficial solution for contractors.

Contractor Umbrella Companies in UK exists for the purpose of providing contractors with a comprehensive tax and payroll solution. With such a task, however, comes the responsibility of finding and picking the one that best suits your needs as a contractor, especially considering you’ll be working offshore.

Unsure where to start? Begin by searching online and comparing websites. Reviews and lists of suppliers exist heavily across the internet, so you can easily do your research with little effort. It’s important to remember to choose the company that best serves your purpose. Recommendations from people you know are also particularly helpful in determining whether a company fits what you are looking for.

Next, understanding how long the company has been around is also helpful in determining whether or not the company is capable of carrying out adequate services for you. For example, myOE has been providing payroll solutions to Australian contractors working in the UK for 15 years, with their own personal experience contracting in Australia and overseas. This factor of experience and knowledge should play a significant role in choosing best UK ancestral visa services.

Another important factor to consider is the costs involved, and what’s included with those costs. Typically, umbrella companies charge on a weekly basis and deduct directly from your earnings before they distribute them to you. Obviously the less the fees are the better, but always ensure quality comes with those fees. You don’t want to get caught out receiving nothing for what you pay for, even if the fees are low. Check out for contractor management.

When you think about why you choose to operate as a contractor under an umbrella company, not only is it because of convenience, but to ensure all tax, expenses and contracts are compliant. This is particularly important due to the fact that the work is being carried out overseas. Compliance assurance is the number one reason contractors working overseas enjoy the use of umbrella companies. The company is able to give advice for things from what wages to expect to what expenses you can claim. The company can manage your tax effectively, because they already know your income and history. In addition to compliance assurance is the capacity for service from the umbrella company Australia. They need to be capable of providing a dedicated account manager for their contractors who understands your income history. The ability to address things quickly and effectively comes second to only compliance in levels of importance.

MyOE understands the need for flexible solutions that optimise the contractor advantage when it comes to living and working in the UK. With the necessary infrastructure, technology, experience, and expertise, myOE operates seamlessly between Australia and the UK to not only take away the hassles of administration, taxes, compliance, and liabilities, but to also help contractors make the most of their overseas experience with free support and guidance services to professionals.

Limited Company vs Umbrella Company: what’s the difference?

When relocating to the UK, a common question people ask is whether they should trade as a limited company or work via an umbrella company. Each has its advantages and disadvantages, depending on your current situation and future plans and overseas experience.

Trading as a limited company while working in the UK usually involves an individual owning and managing their business. They trade by selling their personal services to an end user, often through a recruitment agency. Benefits include business independence and portability, and potential tax advantages. The downside is that the contractor is responsible for their own administration, payment collection, banking and tax.

In 2000, new tax legislation was introduced (IR35) which states that if you would have been an employee of your end user, other than for the existence of an intermediary company, then you will be treated as an employee for tax purposes regardless of how you organize your affairs. MyOE Australian Account Manager Jill Henderson says it was following the introduction of the IR35 legislation that the popularity of umbrella company grew.

“An umbrella company acts as an employer to contractors working at a fixed rate, usually through a recruitment agency. All remuneration is paid to the contractors via a combination of salary, bonuses and tax free expenses. The umbrella company handles the administration of timesheets, collection of payments from clients/agencies, tax, youth mobility visa and National Insurance calculations and payment to the contractors.”

Limited Company vs Umbrella Company: what’s the difference?

Ms Henderson says myOE recommends an umbrella company as the most efficient, safe and dependable way of working in the UK or work in the UK for Australians.

“An employment management company allows you to enjoy the benefits of contracting without the headaches of IR35, limited company administration, insurance costs and accountancy fees. Its simplicity makes it an attractive and flexible option for short term contractors.”

“Employment on a secondment basis with a UK ancestral visa umbrella company is one of the most effective ways to minimise the tax due on your UK income from the time you arrive. This arrangement also gives you up to 24 months of tax relief on your relocation and living expenses,” Ms Henderson said.
